The Lost Collection

In 1971, we were shown an extensive collection of antiquities, purportedly from Khwaja Kanur, by a local American engineering contractor and artifact collector. He had clearly hired people to loot over 4000 artifacts from the site—architectural fragments, column bases, and draperies of baked brick, human torsos and faces, horse and other animal figurines of ceramic—all dating to the Hellenistic and Parthian periods. We viewed and photographed this collection. But what happened to it? Where was it almost 50 years later? Another story on Mitch’s blog.
